The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Found missing papers, including [James] Pennington's memorandum. Sends them to JH. Please send H. D. Harness's memorandum.
Prefers that Henry Finch and Mr. Hill, Jr. be assigned to temporary positions in Mint. Send official letter to Lord Aberdeen [G. Hamilton-Gordon] about this. That leaves one patronage appointment for W. G. Hayter to fill.
Return George Arbuthnot's final memorandum on Australian mint.
Call on CT when convenient.
[Marked 'Confidential.'] JH's reaction to paper was precisely what CT felt. Plans to communicate it to no one else.
Delays question of hiring Mr. Pilcher. Proceed with planning for Sydney branch mint.
Calls JH's attention to articles on mint operations by J. T. Smith.
Concurs with JH's choices of financial officers for minting operations in Birmingham and Sydney. Prefers Mr. Julyan for Sydney branch mint, but will not object to Mr. Watt. One guinea per week is appropriate pay for H. A. Severn.
Call on CT tomorrow before 2:30 pm.
Bring H. D. Harness and E. W. Ward to meet with CT tomorrow to discuss report on Sydney branch mint.
Approves JH's plan to pay E. W. Ward's sappers while they are employed at Mint.
Cannot find JH's official letter regarding appointment of bookkeeper at Mint. Please write another, proposing appointment of John Goldsmith to that office.
Write official letter to CT proposing wages for E. W. Ward's sappers and miners temporarily assisting at Mint. Letters for £150,000 of silver coins were sent.
Thanks for catching CT's error. Returns letter, with £200,000 substituted for £150,000.
Discusses salary for W. H. Barton in new combined office of deputy master and comptroller. Chancellor of Exchequer [W. E. Gladstone] may decide differently. Agrees that Master needs private secretary, but select one from among clerks already employed at Mint. Procedure for countersigning Mint checks.
Forwarded to Chancellor of Exchequer [W. E. Gladstone] JH's letter regarding retirement of H. D. Harness. Does not approve of departure, in JH's plan, from practice of fixed pay for public officers. Surprised by grieved tone of Henry Finch, who turned down earlier generous offer to remain in reorganized Mint.
Surprised by JH's voluminous report on assays, which CT showed to Chancellor of Exchequer [W. E. Gladstone]. Will send copy of Gladstone's decision on several Mint matters. P.S.: Gladstone read last letter that JH wrote to CT.
Treasury intended that junior clerks in Mint should be available for training in all departments, to prepare them for higher positions. Suggestion for appointing supernumerary clerk. Formal conference will be held Saturday.
Meet CT and [James] Wilson at end of week. Hopes Lord Aberdeen [G. Hamilton-Gordon] will appoint Mr. Hill Jr. to vacant clerkship at Mint.
