The Charles Darwin Collection
The Darwin Correspondence Project is publishing letters written by and to the naturalist Charles Darwin (1809–1882). Complete transcripts of letters are being made available through the Project’s website (www.darwinproject.ac.uk) after publication in the ongoing print edition of The Correspondence of Charles Darwin (Cambridge University Press 1985–). Metadata and summaries of all known letters (c. 15,000) appear in Ɛpsilon, and the full texts of available letters can also be searched, with links to the full texts.

Has corrected last page of index of Origin [6th ed.]. Sends instructions.
Requests that JM make stereotype plates of 6th edition of Origin available to D. Appleton. This will be last edition and CD is "extremely anxious" to spread his views.
Asks to have copy of Origin [6th ed.] sent to the Pall Mall Gazette for review with Mivart’s Genesis [of species (1871)].
CD is vexed to hear that some of his friends and some booksellers complain of the type of the new [6th] edition of Origin. CD, whose eyesight is not good, had no trouble reading proofs.
Asks JM to send copies of all his books to Anton Dohrn.
Koch [of Schweizerbart] requires 3000 sets of copies of the heliotype plates [for German edition of Expression].
Has sent off a few trifling errata [of Expression] to Mr Clowes. Asks about the heliotypes.
Would like to hear about the sale of his books. [See 8616.]
CD is delighted and astonished at sale of Expression,
and pleased with sale of others, except Descent. He fears a new edition of that work may never be required. Would have liked to bring out a thoroughly revised one.

Accedes to CD’s request to let Appleton have a set of stereotypes of the 6th English edition of Origin at a little above cost.
JM arranges to pay CD for the latest issue of Descent.
Messrs Clowes have received MS of Expression. JM submits specimen pages for CD’s approval.
R. Cooke has increased the order for heliotypes [for Expression] to 8000. Reimburses CD for cost of artists.
Is convinced that 2000 more copies [of Expression] must be printed without delay in order to meet demand. He therefore asks CD to send his corrections to the printer at once.
The reception of Expression has exceeded even JM’s expectations; 5267 copies were sold at the annual sale. CD’s modesty about the work had misled him about its probable sale.
Price of Expression is 12s.
