The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Death of WE's child. Will return to [Haileybury]. Encloses letter from [A. J.] Ellis. Let Ellis know if JH wants to see Ellis's works.
Reports death of Francis Jeffrey. JH's letter to Jeffrey arrived too late. Mrs. Jeffrey will return to [Haileybury?] with WE.
Is grateful to JH for undertaking to review Alexander von Humboldt's Kosmos. Regarding copyright and printing of this book.
Encloses Thomas Longman's letter. Is very pleased that JH is undertaking the great work.
Encloses sheet from Mr. Moriarty. Assumes he is to make no more inquiries regarding the volumes of Kosmos. Translation keeps abreast of the original. Returns to Haileybury about the 15th.
Has been here some 10 days. Received a copy of JH's great work before leaving Scotland. Hopes of a review of it from George Peacock. Longmans is now arranging for the printing of the review.
Is sorry that JH has been introduced to the law on Trusts under unfavorable circumstances. Longmans wants the review [JH's review of Humboldt's Cosmos] printed and bound by Christmas day. Let him know as soon as his paper is ready.
Has just received his note. Would like to print [JH's review of] Kosmos at Christmas, so let him know if there is a chance of it being ready. Mrs. [Richard] Jones has not been feeling well. Richard Jones is visiting Alexander Baring (1st Baron Ashburton).
Regarding progress with the printing and translation of Kosmos. Richard Jones has visited Alexander Baring (1st Baron Ashburton).
Hopes no inconvenience will be caused by booking JH's paper for 10 Dec.; its length has been estimated as 50 pages. Will send him the text of Kosmos as it comes from the printers. Richard Jones has returned in triumph. Agrees with Alexander Baring (1st Baron Ashburton) on the currency.
Does he mean his paper will be ready for the printer by 10 Dec.? Should be at the binders by the 19th. Political signs need watching. Richard Jones is not well. George Peacock will be home next week.
Everything safe for Longmans. Let him know if he requires any separate copies. Richard Jones is better. William Whewell is mortified at being passed over by the Windsor invitation. George Peacock does not care; he is too happy.
Do not strike out anything he has written. Has been suffering with nose-bleed.
Has been reading as far as page 36 of the proofs with great pleasure. Regarding choice of words for a phrase. Richard Jones is uninfluenced as yet.
Congratulations on finishing his paper. Would he check over the proofs. Richard Jones is well, though not well enough to attend at the College chapel. J. E. D. Bethune and John Lefevre are staying with Jones. Bethune starts for India in February.
Francis Jeffrey (Lord Jeffrey) is the writer of Plaidoyer in the last number; intends it to be a judicial deliverance. Has sent JH's review of the translation of Kosmos to Lord Jeffrey and he praised it highly. Gives some of his comments.
Longmans reckons on 60 pages for the next number so would JH have his article ready to time.
Many thanks for his replies to the queries of Francis Jeffrey's (Lord Jeffrey); they will be appreciated. Use of the word 'vindicated' not happy. Mr. Moriarty called yesterday; he is not appreciated in England. Will send copy of JH's review to Alexander von Humboldt. Hopes he will review the 2nd volume. The Joneses are at Pall Mall, and William Whewell in Paris.
[George] Peacock asks for more time for his review. Enough science in vol. 2 to tempt JH. JH should be the new editor for Brown. Will send Alexander von Humboldt a copy of the review unless he thinks it should come from the author and not the editors. Returns to Haileybury on Thursday.
Has not heard of the results of the Rolfe's visit to Hawkhurst. The Sabines are translating Kosmos and all would be pleased if JH would look at the proofs. Intended stopping at York but had to hurry on to Edinburgh when Francis Jeffrey (Lord Jeffrey) was seriously ill.
