[A. J.] Ellis was correct; JH used earlier version of proof by [C. F.] Gauss in Theoria Motus Corporum Coelestium [1809] and was not aware of newer proof. But Ellis's objection to JH's proof applies only to properties of space.

The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Death of WE's child. Will return to [Haileybury]. Encloses letter from [A. J.] Ellis. Let Ellis know if JH wants to see Ellis's works.
Reports death of Francis Jeffrey. JH's letter to Jeffrey arrived too late. Mrs. Jeffrey will return to [Haileybury?] with WE.
His manuscript arrived and has been dispatched to the printers with the necessary instructions. Regrets to hear that JH's labors are impeded by ill health.
Would be happy to hear of any improvement in JH's health. Encloses a letter from Francis Jeffrey (Lord Jeffrey). J. S. Mill edited Jeremy Bentham's works in two volumes.
Returns the slips received from Francis Jeffrey (Lord Jeffrey); would JH forward them to the printer with his instructions. His mathematical demonstration will be allowed enough room. Pleased to hear his deafness has been relieved.
Would JH agree that his review of L. A. J. Quetelet's book on probabilities be allowed to stand until the June number as there is a large paper on observations for the next number [of the Edinburgh Review]?
Would be pleased to receive JH's paper. His own house is still sad and silent.
When JH sends his paper to Mr. Shaw would he inform WE as he wishes to start the next number off with it. Hopes Mrs. [Richard] Jones's health has improved by her visit to the college.
Sending proofs. Will see that he has altered a few words here and there. Mrs. Jones's health has improved and she talks of going to Richmond.
Would like JH's opinion on the layout of his page.
