The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Had a visit from James Maclaren, who now conveys JN's drawings of the spots on the sun. Comments on the effect of the 'willow leaves.'
Is pleased that JH is to mention JN's 'willow leaves' on the sun in his new edition of Outlines Astr. Will endeavor to make a more perfect photographic copy of the original drawing. Gives a drawing and description of apparatus he uses for solar observations.
Sends by book post two photographs of the original drawings of the sun's observations, also a photograph of a model of the S.E. portion of the moon; comments on them. Will be pleased to accept JH's invitation to visit Collingwood.
Fine weather is getting rare at this time of year and would therefore like to induce the Herschels to visit him while it lasts.
Regrets that JH's engagements prevent them visiting Penshurst. JN too is unable to manage the dates quoted. Hopes his own Herschelian helioscope will be in action by the time the Herschels visit Penshurst.
Hopes JH and Lady Herschel will be able to visit them on some days named. Will write respecting trains as soon as they hear the answer.
Regrets Lady Herschel cannot visit them, but is pleased they are to receive JH and his daughter. Mrs. Nasmyth is writing regarding trains and they will be met at Penshurst.
Concerned to hear that JH's health suffered as the result of the visit to JN. Happy that Warren de La Rue and [J.?] Müller are giving their attention to the objects on the sun. Comments on a peculiar sunspot. Appreciates the promise of the new edition of JH's Outlines Astr. Thanks for the cuneiform signature.
Has great pleasure in receiving a visit from W. C. Morland. Will be pleased to visit the Herschels. Has been travelling in Italy; visited Vesuvius and also called on Angelo Secchi, who was engaged in making a model of the sun's disc and using oat corn grains to illustrate the willow leaf effects.
