The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Read enclosed memoranda, and inform CT whether JH was aware of these before JH made recommendations regarding compensation for Moneyers' tools.
JH's explanation of discrepancy in allowance for repairs of [Moneyers'] machinery is satisfactory. Please return memoranda.
Will respond tomorrow to JH's important note.
Before Treasury commissioners approve pay scale for Mint workmen proposed by JH, they want to know pay scale previously used by Moneyers. If JH or H. D. Harness can call on Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] today, matter can be settled immediately.
Proposal to transfer books and papers of Mint Commission from Treasury Chambers to Mint vaults.
Concurs with JH's proposal for reorganizing Engraving department. Will inform Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood].
Prepare general report of Mint reforms for submission to Parliament.
JH and H. D. Harness may call on CT at Treasury whenever convenient.
Will seek approval from Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] for JH's new arrangement to pay Mint police.
Annual pension for G. F. G. Mathison was fixed by Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] at 'Fourteen Hundred Pounds (1200£).' JH and Henry Rich should submit formal report on this matter.
CT delays answering JH's letter of 3 Nov. 1851 until JH submits report on financial impact of changes in Engraving department after death of William Wyon.
What public service will L. C. Wyon render that justifies Wyon's annual salary of £400? Compares this with duties and salary of Benedetto Pistrucci. Suggests retaining Wyon at present salary of £200 and paying separately for piecework.
Grateful for JH's correction of CT's error in pension for G. F. G. Mathison [see CT's 1851-11-14]. This was CT's first such error in 25 years of public service.
G. F. G. Mathison called on CT yesterday to discuss error in Mathison's pension. Will finalize this after CT receives report from JH and Henry Rich.
Bring report by R. L. Sheil when JH and H. D. Harness visit CT to discuss amalgamation of Coining and Machinery departments. Congratulations on 'remarkable distinction' obtained by JH's son [William] at Haileybury College, CT's alma mater.
Has returned to Treasury. JH and H. D. Harness may call whenever convenient.
Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] will not need to discuss JH's draft of 'Estimate' until after New Year's Day.
Memorandum from Treasury's Financial Room showing quarterly installments paid to Master of Mint. Please explain unusually large expenditures. Previous Mint administrators seldom expended entire grant from Parliament as JH has done. This will be last installment until Parliament approves grant for 1852-53. CT wants JH's assurance that this installment will last until end of fiscal year [31 Mar.].
Sends altered letter for JH's records. Received JH's altered letter for Treasury records.
Replace old title of 'Melter' for Robert Mushet's office with new title used in reorganized Mint. Why does Mushet call his annual pay of £100 'inadequate'? Send JH's 'draft letter & Estimate' so CT can explain to Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] difference between JH's original and present proposals regarding [W. T.] Brande.
