The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Is sending a book of travels by Mr. Tyler, which gives an account of the Mexican stone and flint implements. Alexander Herschel called. The latter's experiments with hydrogen are useful.
Marquis of Bute [J. P. C. Stuart] purchased property of CB's sister [Mary Anne Hollier] in Cardiff. [Charles] Few & Co., managers of property, sent title for CB's and JH's signatures. Sorry that JH was troubled again by pressure from CB's nephews for money.
Regarding financial affairs. Is having trouble with his eyes. Has done little of late.
Apologizes for JH's further troubles with trust fund for CB's sister [Mary Anne Hollier], whose three sons are selling off their inheritances. Solicitor Charles Few will take care of legal issues. Not likely that JH can resign as trustee.
Charles Few will send deed for JH's signature. It transfers property of CB's sister [Mary Anne Hollier] in Cardiff to Marquis of Bute [J. P. C. Stuart]. Expects no further changes in trust and no more troubles for JH. Saw Alexander Herschel's work on 'shooting stars' published by B.A.A.S. Illness of CB's son [Henry P. Babbage] in India. CB's latest book.
Please sign enclosed legal document and return to Messrs. 'Praed.' CB overworked, but hopes to complete Passages from the Life of a Philosopher before Christmas.
Will JH and his son [William] come and dine with him this week?
Thanking him for his book [probably Passages in the Life of a Philosopher].
Believes that John Davy's letter to the Philosophical Magazine was suggested by James South. To defend himself, CB now needs JH's permission to publish some of their correspondence.
Gives CB permission to publish the portions of letters requested by him. JH tells CB that he has responded to John Davy's letter in the PM.
Commiserates with JH in his illness, and says CB is ill also and confined to his house. Seeing JH's letter in the Philosophical Magazine [see JH's 1864-12-20] seems to CB to obviate completely the need for any further response.
Draws JH's attention to an article in the most recent Philosophical Magazine.
Regarding the signing of a new document for CB's sister. Has been reading JH's paper on the sun. Wishes he would print a list of all his papers.
Is returning the trust deed duly signed. A list of his papers was printed in an American periodical. Hopes his yachting improved his health. He is suffering from bronchitis. Trouble with the Irish.
News of the forthcoming marriage of his daughter. Everyone seems to be mad on making ice.
