Has read and greatly admires CD’s latest book, Cross and self-fertilisation; seeks permission to translate it into French and to add some annotations. [EMH’s translation was published in 1877.]

Would be honoured to have Cross and self fertilisation translated into French by EH; he has written to his French publisher, Charles-Ferdinand Reinwald.

EH’s notes will add interest and he would like to read them.

Sends correction to p. 275 of Cross and self fertilisation [but see letter to Édouard Heckel, 4 March 1877].

Asks EH to make a small correction in his translation [of Cross and self-fertilisation].

Thinks EH’s translation of Cross and self-fertilisation [1877] is excellent.

Would like him to do Forms of flowers, but Reinwald is afraid to have it translated in the present political state of France.

Pleased EH is translating Forms of flowers. Agrees "cowslip" and "oxlip" ought to be translated by their scientific names.

CD grateful to EH for making his works known in France.

Supervising French translation of Movement in plants. Why does not CD consider spontaneous movements of flower parts, which EMH sees also as circumnutation?
