Edward Coke (1552–1634)

Jurist. Speaker of the House of Commons, 1592–3; attorney-general, 1593–4; chief justice of the Common Pleas, 1606; chief justice of the King’s Bench, 1613. His Institutes (1628), consisting of a translation and reprint of Thomas Littleton’s Tenures (c. 1481) with a commentary, the text of various statutes with commentaries, and a treatise on the jurisdiction of different courts, had a profound influence on early modern English law.
