Entomologist, author, and translator. Prepared lists of insects for the British Museum, 1847–58. Curator of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society’s museum, 1858–68. Assistant secretary to the Geological Society of London, 1868–90. Translated Fritz Müller’s Für Darwin (1869); prepared the index for Variation and the glossary for Origin 6th ed. Editor, Annals and Magazine of Natural History, 1868–90, Popular Science Review, 1877–81.
