Gabriel-Madeleine-Camille (Camille) Dareste (1822–99)

French zoologist. A specialist in experimental embryology. Doctor of medicine, 1847. Doctor of science, 1851. Taught natural history at various provincial institutions. Professor of zoology, University of Lille, 1864–72. Professor of ichthyology and herpetology, Muséum d’histoire naturelle, Paris, 1872. Director of the laboratory of teratology, later attached to the École des hautes-études, 1875. Awarded the grand prize in physiology by the Académie des sciences for Recherches sur la production artificielle de monstruosités (1877).
