Naval officer and hydrographer. Second master on the Terror during the Antarctic expedition, 1839–43. Drew the charts for the expedition. Surveyor to the North Atlantic telegraph expedition, 1862. Naval assistant (curator of original documents) in the Hydrographic Department of the Admiralty, 1865–76. Captain, 1870.
