Ernst Dieffenbach (1811–55)

German physician, naturalist, and geologist. Studied medicine at Giessen, 1828–33; MD, Zurich, 1835. Surgeon and naturalist to the New Zealand Company, 1839–40. Professor extraordinarius of geology and director of the mineralogical collection at Giessen, 1851–5. Translated CD’s Journal of researches into German (1844).
