Historian, traveller, and journalist. Published lives of William Penn (1851), Robert Blake (1852), and Francis Bacon (1862). Editor of the Athenæum, 1853–69. Justice of the peace for Middlesex and Westminster, 1869. Member of the London School Board, 1869. Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Geographical Society of London.
