Jean Jacques Dortous de Mairan (1678–1771)

French physicist. Studied wide variety of topics, including heat, light, sound, motion, the shape of the earth, and the aurora. Made pensionnaire géomètre, Academy of Sciences, Paris, in 1746. Foreign member, Royal Society.
