Emil Heinrich (Emil) Du Bois-Reymond (1818–96)

German physiologist. A founder of the Physikalische Gesellschaft in Berlin, 1845. Instructor in anatomy, Berlin Academy of Art, 1848–53. Elected member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, 1851; permanent secretary, 1876. Appointed professor of physiology at the University of Berlin, 1858. Worked on animal electricity, and in 1850 invented the nerve galvanometer to measure the electrical impulses in nerve and muscle tissue.
