George Everest (1790–1866)

Military engineer. Educated at Great Marlow and Woolwich military schools. Achieved the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the army. Superintendent of the trigonometrical survey of India, 1823–43. Knighted, 1861. FRS 1827.
