Zoologist and anatomist. BM and Master of surgery, Edinburgh, 1874. Curator, Zoological Museum, University College, London, 1874–78. Travelled to museums in Europe and worked in Straßburg (Strasbourg), 1876. Lecturer in anatomy, extra-mural school of medicine, Edinburgh, 1878. Professor of natural history, Edinburgh, 1882–1927. FRS 1893.
