James Frederick Ferrier (1808–64)

Scottish philosopher. BA, Magdalen College, Oxford, 1832. Admitted to the Scottish bar, but never practised. Elected professor of civil history, University of Edinburgh, 1842; of moral philosophy and political economy, St Andrews, 1845. Applied German idealism to Scottish common-sense philosophy; developed an innovative non-empirical account of epistomology and metaphysics.
