Physician. Assistant physician to University College Hospital, 1846; physician, professor of materia medica and therapeutics, and professor of clinical medicine, 1851–62. Gulstonian Lecturer, Royal College of Physicians, 1857. Physician to King’s College Hospital and professor of materia medica and therapeutics, King’s College, London, 1862–74. Physician-extraordinary to Queen Victoria, 1890. A specialist in the treatment of gout. Knighted 1887. FRS 1858.
