Scottish geologist. Appointed member of the Scottish branch of the Geological Survey in 1855. Director of the Geological Survey of Scotland, 1867–82. Director-general of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, 1882–1901. Murchison Professor of geology and mineralogy, Edinburgh University, 1871–81. Knighted, 1891. FRS 1865.
