Hermenegildo Giner de los Ríos (1847–1923)

Spanish politician, teacher, and essayist. Doctor of philosophy and literature, Universidad Central, Madrid, 1870. Professor of psychology, logic, and philosophy, Instituto del Osuna. Dismissed from his post, with other liberal-minded professors, 1875. In 1876, with his brother, Francisco, founded the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, offering education outside the religious and political restrictions of the state; secretary, 1876–91.
