John Hawley Glover (1829–85)

Naval officer and colonial administrator. Entered the Royal Navy in 1841 and served at sea until 1862. Harbour master and acting governor of Lagos, 1861–4; secretary, 1864–6; administrator, 1866–72. Special commissioner to the eastern district of the Gold Coast, 1873; took part in the Second Anglo-Asante War. Governor of Newfoundland, 1876–81; of the Leeward Islands, 1881–3; of Newfoundland again, 1883–5. Knighted, 1874.
