Acton Smee Ayrton (1816–86)

Politician. Solicitor in India; returned to England in 1851 and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple, 1853. Liberal MP for Tower Hamlets, 1857–74. First commissioner of works, 1869–73. Judge-advocate-general, 1873–4.
