James Hall (1811–98)

American geologist and palaeontologist. Palaeontologist to the New York State geological survey from 1843. Also state geologist of Iowa, 1855–8; of Wisconsin, 1857–60. Appointed director of New York State Museum in 1866; made state geologist in 1893.
