Phebe Ann Coffin Hanaford (1829–1921)

American Universalist minister and author. Educated in Nantucket, Massachusetts, in public and private schools. Married Joseph Hibbard Hanaford in 1849. Pastor, Universalist Church, Hingham, Massachusetts, 1868–70; New Haven, Connecticut, 1870–4. While in New Haven, served as chaplain of the Connecticut legislature. Moved to the Church of the Good Shepherd, Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1874, but from 1877, when the congregation split over the issue of women's rights, preached for seven years in a public hall. Pastor, Second Universalist Church, Jersey City, 1884–91. Took part in various women’s causes. Compiled a biographical survey of the work of American women in all fields.
