Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–94)

German physiologist and physicist. Professor of anatomy and physiology at Bonn from 1855, and at Heidelberg from 1858. A close friend of William Thomson from 1853. Appointed professor of physics, Berlin, 1871. Foreign member, Royal Society of London, 1860. Copley Medal, 1873.
