Sophie McIlvaine Bledsoe (Sophie) (Bledsoe) Herrick (1837–1919)

American editor and writer. Head of a Baltimore girls’ school, 1868–72. Writer and associate editor, Southern Review, 1872–77; editor, 1877. Studied biology at Johns Hopkins University in 1876. An editor of Scribner’s Monthly from 1879, and its successor, Century, until 1906. Wrote science books for children, mostly on botany and geology.
