William Chapman Hewitson (1806–78)
Naturalist. Worked as a land surveyor, circa 1828–45, after which he devoted his time to scientific research. Co-founder of the Natural History Society of Northumberland, Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne, 1829. Specialised in the diurnal Lepidoptera and formed one of the most complete collections in the world; published Genera of diurnal lepidoptera (1846–52) with Edward Doubleday. Also wrote on ornithology and oology.
