William Balfour Baikie (1825–64)

Naval surgeon, naturalist, and philologist. Assistant surgeon, Royal Navy, 1848. Assistant surgeon, Haslar Hospital, 1851–4. Surgeon and naturalist on the Niger expedition, 1854; succeeded to the command of the vessel during the voyage. Undertook a second Niger expedition in 1857. Explored West Africa until his death in Sierra Leone.
