Joseph Bassett Holder (1824–88)

American naturalist and physician. Studied at Harvard Medical School. Practised in Swampscott and Lynn, Massachusetts. Surgeon-in-chief to government engineers on the Florida reef, 1859–62. Health officer and surgeon, military prison at Fort Jefferson, Florida, 1862–9; at Fort Monroe, Virginia, 1869–71. Assistant, American Museum of Natural History, 1871–81; curator from 1881. Wrote on marine zoology.
