William Hunter (1718–83)

Physician, anatomist, and man-midwife. His dissection of a full-term gravid uterus allowed him to determine the relationship between the maternal and foetal blood systems in the placenta. First professor of anatomy, Royal Academy, 1768. FRS 1767.
