Naval officer. Commander of Lady Franklin’s private steamer, Isabella, on an expedition in search of John Franklin, 1852; published an account of the search in 1853. Undertook other Arctic voyages, 1853–4. Rear-admiral, 1869; admiral, 1879. FRS 1853.
