Geologist. Geological surveyor of Newfoundland, 1839–40. Naturalist aboard HMS Fly in the survey of the north-east coast of Australia, 1842–6. Geologist with the Geological Survey of Great Britain working in North Wales and the English Midlands, 1846–50. Local director of the Geological Survey of Ireland, 1850–67; director, 1867–9. Lecturer on geology at the Royal College of Science, Dublin, from 1854. President of the Geological Society of Dublin, 1853–4. FRS 1853.
