Irish chemist. Professor of chemistry, Apothecaries’ Hall, Dublin, 1831–45, and of natural philosophy to the Royal Dublin Society, 1834–47. Editor of the Philosophical Magazine, 1840–90. President of Queen’s College, Cork, 1845–73. Knighted 1846. FRS 1849.
