Austen Henry Layard (1817–94)

Diplomat and archaeologist. Excavated Nineveh and published several works on the topic. Attaché to the embassy at Constantinople (Istanbul), 1849–51. Liberal MP for Aylesbury, 1852–7; for Southwark, 1860. First commissioner of works, 1868–9. Ambassador to Madrid, 1869–77; to Constantinople, 1877–80.
