Edgar Leopold Layard (1824–1900)

Civil servant and naturalist. Served in the Ceylon civil service, 1846–54; in the Cape of Good Hope civil service, 1854–70. Studied the birds and shells of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Curator of the South African museum, 1855–72. Published on the birds of South Africa (1867). (DSAB, Modern English biography
