Joseph Lister (1827–1912)

Surgeon. Assistant surgeon to the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, 1856–60. Professor of surgery, Glasgow University, 1860–9; of clinical surgery, 1869–77. Announced his system of antiseptic surgery in the Lancet in 1867. Professor of surgery, King’s College, London, 1877–92. FRS 1860.
