John Couch Adams (1819–92)

Astronomer and mathematician. Co-discoverer, by mathematical calculation, of the planet Neptune. Fellow and tutor, St John’s College, Cambridge, 1843–52; Pembroke College from 1853. Lowndean Professor of astronomy and geometry, Cambridge University, 1859–92; director of the Cambridge Observatory, 1861–92. FRS 1849.
