Botanist. Assistant surgeon on HMS Terror in James Clark Ross’s Antarctic voyage, 1839–43. Surgeon and naturalist on HMS Acheron in New Zealand; on HMS Assistance in the Arctic, 1852. On British Columbia Boundary Commission, 1858–61. Collected plants in the Antarctic, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada. Friend of Joseph Dalton Hooker.
