Friedrich Max Müller (1823–1900)
German-born orientalist and philologist. Published an edition of the Rig Veda, the most important of the sacred books of the Brahmans, 1849–74. Moved to Paris in 1845; settled in Oxford in 1848 after fleeing the revolution in France. Deputy Taylorian Professor of modern European languages, Oxford University, 1851–4; professor, 1854–68; professor of comparative philology, 1868–1900. Curator of the Bodleian Library, Oxford, 1856–63 and 1881–94.
