Gabriel Cornelius (Gabriel) Max (1840–1915)

Bohemian-born German painter. Born in Prague; studied at the art academy there, and then in Vienna, 1855–8. Studied in Munich, 1863–7. Professor of historical painting, Munich, 1879–83. Lived at Starnberger Lake in Ammerland, where he had a large colony of monkeys. Interested in spiritualism and the occult. Ennobled in 1900.
