Alfred Marshall Mayer (1836–97)

American physicist. Professor of physics and chemistry, University of Maryland, 1856–9. Charless Professor of physical sciences, Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri, 1859–61. Studied physics at the University of Paris, France, 1863–5. Ockershausen Professor of physical science, Pennsylvania College of Gettysburg, 1865–7. Professor of physics, Lehigh University, Bethleham, Pennsylvania, 1867–71; Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey, from 1871. Became the leading US authority on acoustics; travelled to Britain in 1873.
