Dutch-born physiologist, physician, and philosopher. General practitioner, Utrecht, 1845–7. Lecturer in physiology and anthropology, Heidelberg, 1847–54. Appointed professor of physiology, Zurich, 1856; of experimental physiology and physiological chemistry, Turin, 1861. Professor of physiology, Rome, 1879. Became an Italian citizen and later senator in 1876. Advocate of materialist, monist philosophy.
