Thomas Spencer Baynes (1823–87)

Editor and philosopher. Studied logic and metaphysics at Edinburgh University, 1845–9. Taught logic at the Philosophical Institution in Edinburgh. Editor of the Edinburgh Guardian, 1850. Professor of logic, metaphysics, and English literature at the University of St Andrews, 1864–87. General editor of the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1875–89).
