George Strong Nares (bap. 1831 d. 1915)

Naval officer and Arctic explorer. Attended the Royal Naval School at New Cross and entered the navy in 1845. Captain of the Challenger during its expedition of oceanographic exploration, 1872–4. Leader of the Arctic expedition, 1875–6. Knighted, 1876. FRS 1875.
