German naturalist and leading exponent of Naturphilosophie. Associate professor of medicine, University of Jena, 1807–12; professor of natural history, 1812–19. Professor of physiology, University of Munich, 1827–32; professor of natural history, natural philosophy, and physiology, Zürich University, 1832–51.
