Francis Turner Palgrave (1824–97)

Poet, critic, and educationalist. Assistant private secretary to William Ewart Gladstone, 1846. Joined the department of education in 1848; vice-principal, Kneller Hall, 1850–5; examiner and assistant secretary, 1855–84. Art critic for the Saturday Review. Professor of poetry, Oxford University, 1885–95.
