Francis Palgrave (1823–1861)

Archivist and historian. Author of several works on the history of England and on antiquarian topics. Deputy keeper of the queen’s records, 1838–61. In anticipation of his marriage, converted to Christianity and changed his surname to Palgrave, the maiden name on his wife’s mother; married Joseph Dalton Hooker’s aunt, Elizabeth Turner, in 1823. Knighted, 1832. FRS 1821.
