Lawyer and politician. Conservative MP for Plymouth, 1847–57; for Richmond, Yorkshire, 1861–72. Attorney-general, 1863–6. Lord chancellor, 1872–4, 1880–5. Created Baron Selborne, 1872. FRS 1860.
